Forward/Back Is a Lie.

We had the tech but not the mode.

The internet provided constant access to everything — but the limitation was always the way it was navigated. Linear browsing, rabbit holes, an optimized narrowing of thinking that flattened the way human cognition actually works. It forced a pattern that functioned but never fit.

How the mind actually works

Human beings don't think in lines. In developed cognitive practice, thinking moves in all directions simultaneously — up, down, lateral, associative, recursive. Relationships in holographic space. The mind doesn't browse. It expands.

Every interface we built ignored this. Forward and back is a lie borrowed from physical movement and applied to something that was never spatial. We were navigating a library by walking in a straight line and calling it search.

The dependency has flipped.

The shift

AI changes the relationship between thinking and tool. For the first time an interface adapts to the user's thinking rather than requiring the user to adopt the machine's. It models, accepts, and promotes a more natural cognitive pattern — helping optimize the multi-directional relationships the brain already makes.

Crucially, learning to work well with an AI chat interface rewards the user with transferable skills. Learn to manipulate data through conversation and you have learned something that applies everywhere. Not a single application. Not a proprietary grammar. A way of thinking.

On holographic space

The term comes from philosophy of mind and psychedelic theory — the idea that consciousness operates relationally in all directions at once, not sequentially. Terence McKenna used it to describe expanded cognition. It maps precisely to what good thinking actually feels like.

Four verbs

The conversation metaphor allows the UI to present itself only when needed. Instead of forward and back, four verbs:

Keep exploring this direction.
Open
Expand, change mode, go deeper.
Close
Collapse this. It is not relevant.
Explain
Show me your reasoning — the verb no interface has ever offered before.

That last one has never existed before. No traditional interface could offer it because no traditional interface had reasoning to expose. Explain is only possible when there is something underneath worth explaining.

These four verbs should cover the majority of what a UI needs to do. The rest builds itself — ad hoc, in response to the user, with real intent.

Not a feature.
A different kind of interface altogether.

One that finally respects the holographic space the human mind has always lived in.
